Many carpets and rugs are hazardous to humans and the environment. When purchasing carpets, avoid those made of synthetic fibers, which are derived from petroleum, a non-renewable resource.
Handmade rugs tend to be made from natural fibers, such as wool and cotton

Most couches use foam, a very eco-unfriendly product, to fill cushions. Choose furniture that uses wood manufactured from sustainably harvested trees, natural fabrics and minimal plastic.
Bedroom
Bed frames should be constructed of sustainable wood.
Most mattresses are derived from nonrenewable resources and are treated with various chemicals to make them flame, fungus and pest preventive. Purchase an organic mattress, which will have all these same qualities.
Organic bedding and linens are better for your health, your comfort and the environment.
Lighting
Choose lamps made of organic or natural materials
Purchase CFL and LED bulbs for lamps
Install timers and motion sensors
Most store bought candles are cut with a significant amount of petroleum-derived oil and are made from synthetic wax. Choose beeswax and soy oil which offer no toxic fumes.
Paint
Choose natural paints that contain little or no VOCs.
Be sure to use a safe paint disposal system
